Popcorn is a favorite snack for many, a snack that is married to movie watching and an easy go-at anytime. There really is nothing fancy about popcorn – just plain ole’ popcorn kernels. And that is exactly what we are going to do, simply pop some kernels.
Popcorn is a whole grain, meaning it contains all three parts of the entire plant seed.
What is a Whole Grain?
- Bran – The outer layer that contains antioxidants, B vitamins and fiber
- Endosperm – The largest part of the kernel that contains the starchy carbohydrates, proteins and small amounts of vitamins and minerals.
- Germ – Contains the embryo and source of many B vitamins, some protein, minerals, and healthy fats.
When you see the words “whole grain” written on any product or in any ingredient list – it must contain all three parts of the grain.
Making homemade popcorn was a little project my kids and I tested over the quarantine homeschool weeks. We tested many different ways to make this popcorn from the amount of time it took to make the freshest popcorn or the best ways to season the kernels. For some reason this simple act of making homemade popcorn from scratch rather than popping up a bag of microwave popcorn has won over my kids. They were really surprised that is all it took to make popcorn! Plus, they experimented with seasonings each child enjoys and we have found that everyone loves their popcorn just a little bit different.
Homemade Popcorn
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup popcorn kernels
Instructions
-
In a paper bag place popcorn kernels in the bag. Fold top of the bag for closure. Place in the microwave for about 1 minute and 50 seconds (this may alter depending upon microwave). Place popped popcorn in a container with lid.
Season with one tablespoon of canola oil and sprinkle with salt. Place lid on container and shake to evenly distribute seasonings.
Notes
We have found that you can reuse the brown paper bag over if you season after popping in a different container (plus it is fun for the kids to shake and season). A 1/4 cup popcorn kernels makes about 4 cups of popcorn.
Honestly, before I had kids, as a professional I would always comment and say, “Get the kids in the kitchen with this fun recipe.” Little did I know all the mess and patience I would be in for, ha! I totally get it now and there are some days when you need to cook alone and other days it sure can be fun. This simple one-step recipe involves little mess and lots of fun, plus it takes no time and usually followed up with a movie. Yay! Cheers to you and hope you enjoy this fun, healthy and easy treat!
